| Established
under an act in 1951, the University of Karachi is located on a 12,00 acre
area. As the oldest University in Karachi and a center of higher learning
and research, it occupies an enviable status. One of its institutes - HEJ
institute of chemistry - has been recognized as a center of third world
academy of sciences.
Presently
the University the of Karachi consists of eight faculties namely, Arts
& Commerce, Science, Pharmacy, Education, Medicine, Law, and Islamic
Studies. Forty-three departments function under these faculties on the
campus. Apart from these, there are 17 research centers of excellence and
97 affiliated colleges. The University offers honors and postgraduate courses
besides research programs leading to M.PhiL and Ph.D degrees. nearly
13,000 students, out of which 4% are foreign students are enrolled in the
university.
Teaching
and research is conducted by highly qualified teachers, some of whom have
been internationally acclaimed. Nineteen departments of the faculty of
Arts and commerce offer honors and masters level courses and research facilities
leading to M.PhiL and Ph.D degrees. The faculty of Arts & Commerce
also offers certificate courses in Arabic, English, Persian, Hindi, Sindhi,
Spanish, French, Turkish, German, and Urdu for foreigners. Other subjects
in which diplomas are offered offered are Persian, Sindhi, Local Government,
Public, Administration, Economics, Finance and Transport.
Over
the past seven years, over 200 Ph.D and around 185 M.PhiL degrees have
been awarded in various disciplines in the faculties of Arts, Commerce,
Pharmacy and Science.
The
University of Karachi is on the move; it is constantly striving to update
and expand academic facilities offered in various disciplines. Several
departments are successfully forging academic linkages with reputed universities
and college at home and abroad. The university of Karachi is geared to
meet the human resource development needs of the country in the new millennium. |
